07/15: SSHFS
I saw this come through my Inbox today: Cool User File Systems, Part 1: SSHFS
I recently used SSHFS and a RIPLinux and Clonezilla Live CDs to move a physical Linux machine into a VMware VM. Very neat and has a lot of other cool ad hoc uses.
Basically, I used RIPLinux to boot up the physical machine, mount the existing root filesystem read-only (to keep the copy consistent), and run an SSH server for use with SSHFS. I used RIPLinux because it supports Linux MD RAID (and LVM) and also includes modules for XFS (which I needed), JFS, Reiser and other non-Ext Linux filesystems. Believe it or not, I couldn't find another CD distro with a decent selection of packages and such broad filesystem support.
I then used Clonezilla on the target machine and only used the SSHFS mount functionality to mount the old machine's filesystem and copy the installation over. After that it was just a matter of fixing up /etc/fstab, removing the mdraid package (because of the old version of Debian Linux involved and a bug related to missing MD-based swap and auto-resume from suspend), booting once more from RIPLinux - this time on the target - and chroot'ing to the target filesystem and setting up the grub boot loader.
It worked wonderfully for a gross hack and the "new" version of the existing "old" machine is up and running in VMware.
RIPLinux is great too. If you're a sysadmin and you beat on boxes regularly or just want a great recovery aid, RIPLinux should definitely be in your toolbox.

Clonezilla is quite ugly but can be very useful as well: http://clonezilla.org/

One of the selling points of Windows Vista was that it was "more secure" than Windows XP or previous Windows Operating Systems. If this is the case wouldn't it stand to reason that there should be many more security updates for Windows XP than Windows Vista? Instead, it appears as though Microsoft is going nearly 1:1 with the *same* security updates for Vista, XP, 2003, and even Windows 2000. Yet another month's updates are set to roll out, and yet again the same vulnerability affects all the supported platforms. I'm calling bullshit.

See the Affected Software section. Granted the Vista advisories are listed as "moderate" instead of "critical", but if we're par for the course they're subjectively listed that way because most likely it's only "critical" if you run as administrator on your desktop with the Vista User Access Control (UAC) turned off... which most people I know with Vista do.

In caps, no less.
05/20: CW Bringing Back Reaper
The CW network has given a 13-episode midseason renewal to its comedic hourlong series Reaper, Variety reported. The story centers on a slacker guy (Bret Harrison) who's forced to work for the devil (Ray Wise), thanks to a Faustian bargain made years ago by his parents. The freshman series from ABC Studios has a cadre of loyal fans but has otherwise struggled in the ratings.
The renewal decision went down to the wire, coming hours before the CW's 2008-09 upfront presentation in New York on May 13, the trade paper reported.

Love this show.

Yeah, baby. National holiday.
11/09: Site Moved
This is really just a test message. I wish it were something more but it's not. I just moved web hosts and am using cPanel for the first time. I did an eval on it a few years ago as part of a job looking for a hosting platform for someone but it wasn't nearly what it is now. What it is now is bizzaroland if you're used to vanilla Linux. =)
I think things are settling in now. I've managed to figure out most of the issues with moving a non-cPanel created site into cPanel but the Gallery is totally busted. That doesn't *look* like cPanel's fault however. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

01/16: Bumper Cars
I grew up in Buffalo, so it kind of cracks me up when I see people freaking out about three inches of snow in the Northwest. I mean, I used to jump off the roof of the garage and do flips into the snow in my back yard it was so deep. Yet, we would still have school and be able to drive. Then I realized the difference... inclines.
Why even a bit of snow is evil in the Northwest...
